 Policeman Shoots Abuja Resident Over Beer
A policeman in uniform yesterday in Abuja shot a man in the leg after an argument on who should pay for a bottle of beer. The incident occurred at a beer parlour, popularly called ‘Yori-Yori shop’ located on the Ebitu Ukiwe Street, Jabi District around 2pm. Witnesses said the policeman was under the influence of alcohol before he fired his gun.

In what has emerged like a replay of the Police Equipment Fund scandal, a crisis is at present brewing within the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) over the compulsory one-off deduction of N500 from the allowances of corps members to fund a scheme that is ostensibly a private concern, but registered as NYSC Foundation. The foundation is believed to have benefitted from corps members’ contributions running into millions of naira. NYSC mobilises at least 300,000 young graduates of tertiary institutions annually.
THISDAY investigation revealed that the scam all began in 2007 with the approval of the then management of NYSC.

OnitshaTraders and small scale industrialists lost goods and properties worth millions of naira yesterday in Onitsha following an early morning fire that gutted the polythene dealers market, Nwaizu Estate, Awada. Three businessmen, who could not withstand the enormity of their losses allegedly attempted suicide by jumping into the raging fire but hey were later rescued by fellow traders. When Daily Sun reporter visited the market yesterday morning, billows of smoke covered everywhere, while parts of the market were still on fire even as the traders watched helplessly as nothing was recovered from the inferno.

A 19-year- old street trader, Emeka Chukwumuata, was on Friday sentenced to two months imprisonment by the Special Offences Court, Alausa, Ikeja, for selling a Fufu-Stuffed (cassava-stuffed) Nokia phone.
“I am usually lenient to young people but you have to go in for inflicting pain on people,’’ the Magistrate, Mrs O. Kushanu said.

The other members of the group arrived amidst cheers by fans, but one could tell that the leader of the band was worried; perhaps knowing the credibility question the defection by the boys could pose to his career. Reports say the ‘gospel tungba’ crooner, has written to the United States Homeland Security to track and deport the three guys who defected at the tail-end of the inter city concert.

Mr Shem Obafaiye, the Oyo State Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), says the command has arrested three of the six suspected leaders behind pipeline vandalism in the state. Obafaiye said this on Thursday at the command’s headquarters in Ibadan while parading a 35-year-old driver arrested for oil pipeline vandalism. Acknowledging that the fight against vandalism was tough, Obafaiye said the commitment of the NSCDC was to sustain the campaign.

COALITION of Civil Society Organizations, Market women and students have staged a protest with placards of different inscriptions at the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, over the continuous strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, alleging that the strike has increased prostitution in the country. The group which noted that the strike was entering the fourth month appealed to the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, the Trade Union Congress, TUC and appealed to the union to call off the strike in the interest of Nigerians.

The son of a director in the civil service of a South West state, Tosin George a.k.a. Olorunwa, a robbery gang kingpin, is currently on the wanted list of the Oyo State Police Command after about seven vehicles snatched from different victims were recovered from different parts of the country by operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Ibadan. Also arrested were five of his gang members. George, a polytechnic dropout turned driver, had once been arrested by SARS operatives in Ibadan for robbery but had to have his charge changed to stealing when his father allegedly threatened to sue the police for defaming the character of his son. It was learnt, however, that the father himself had been faced with realities of his son’s activities when it was discovered that he even registered one of the snatched vehicles in his father’s name. The vehicle was discovered in his father’s compound.

 baby born in Makurdi on Thursday with four ear lobes and no genitals has died, a hospital official said.
The baby was delivered by Mrs Mbanengen Emmanuel at about 5:30 p.m at Yima Hospital, located in International Market area, a suburb of Makurdi in Benue. The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. John Dzike, on Friday said that the baby died “few hours after delivery”.

Varsity teachers remained adamant last night, saying their strike would go on, despite the government’s shifting of its position. The strike has been on for four months. More cash has been pledged for projects on the campuses. Besides, the earned allowances due to the teachers have been increased from the initial N30 billion offer, which the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) rejected. The teachers are insisting on the 2009 agreement, which they say President Goodluck Jonathan was part of. Besides, they say, they do not trust the government.

Saheed Waliu, the 28-year-old, who was in a coma five months after being allegedly brutalised by some policemen, is dead. Waliu was said to have given up the ghost at about 9am last Sunday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos.
