Police arrest husband for wife’s mysterious death

Police arrest husband for wife’s mysterious death

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested the husband of a 36-year-old woman, Onyeyechi Ihaza, who was allegedly murdered in a mysterious circumstance in Ijaiye area of the state.

The husband, Ehis Ihaza, is being questioned by the police because he was the one who discovered the corpse and could not explain how his wife died.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Onyeyechi was found with stab wounds at her home in Ayinla Adams Street on Friday and the circumstances surrounding her murder were still mysterious.

Our correspondent, who visited the area on Monday, learnt that Ehis allegedly discovered his wife’s corpse a day after she died.

A neighbour, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said the deceased and her husband had been living in the apartment along with their two children for over nine years.

He said the mother of two died on Thursday but her corpse was only discovered on Friday.

He said, “Last Thursday, I saw Ehis come back from work and he parked his car outside and told me he just returned from a journey. One of our neighbours gave him stool to sit. When I asked him why he sat outside, he told me his wife went out and she had yet to come back. He sat outside eating food in a take-away plastic.

“After a while when he didn’t see his wife and couldn’t gain entrance, he left for a hotel to sleep. On the following day (Friday) around 10am, he told me he broke the door to his apartment open, only to find his wife dead.”

The neighbour said Ehis automatically became the prime suspect because only he and his wife lived in the house.

“Ehis did not see his wife the night before and did not bother to look for her. He went to sleep in a hotel and now came back the following morning to break the door so as to gain access. He could have forced his way in that very day when he didn’t see her if he was really concerned about her well-being.”

Our correspondent, who visited the Ijaiye-Ojokoro Police Division, learnt that Ehiz was still being interrogated by the police.

However, a neighbour, who pleaded anonimity, said the couple had no history of violence and said Ehiz could not have killed his wife.

He said, “They have been living here for about nine years now. They have two sons, one is 14 and the other is 12. They’re in the boarding school. Ehiz is a spare parts dealer.

A resident who identified himself only as Olamide said, “When I inspected the corpse, I observed a stab wound on her side and it seemed as if she had been engaged in a struggle with her assailant. She also had injuries on her forehead. The mysterious thing is, the door to their apartment was not broken and she was locked in after she was killed.

It was, however, learnt that the deceased’s two mobile phones were missing as well as the keys to the apartment.

When contacted on the telephone, the spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident to our correspondent, adding that Ehiz would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.

“The husband has been arrested and he will be transferred to SCID, Yaba for further investigation,” she said
